Abstract

Arwob wood (Dodonaea viscosa J.) is a fast-growing pioneer species commonly found in the Arfak Mountains, West Papua. This study aimed to determine the fiber dimensions and derived parameters to assess the fiber quality of Arwob wood as raw material for pulp and paper. The research was conducted at the Laboratory of Forest Product Technology, Faculty of Forestry, University of Papua, using a descriptive quantitative method. The observed parameters included fiber length, diameter, wall thickness, and lumen diameter, as well as derived values such as the Muhlsteph ratio, Runkel ratio, felting power, rigidity coefficient, and flexibility ratio. The results showed that Arwob wood has an average fiber length of 0.5424 mm, fiber diameter of 0.0117 mm, wall thickness of 0.0033 mm, and lumen diameter of 0.0051 mm. The mean values of derived parameters were Muhlsteph 86.420, Runkel 1.335, felting power 45.749, rigidity coefficient 0.294, and flexibility 0.439. According to fiber quality classification, Arwob wood belongs to Class III, indicating its potential as a raw material for pulp and paper such as newsprint or decorative paper.
