Abstract

Eczema is a chronic skin disorder characterized by inflammation, itching, and recurrent relapses, often associated with immune dysregulation and oxidative stress. Corticosteroids remain the primary treatment but their long-term use is linked to adverse effects, thereby necessitating safer natural alternatives. Moringa oleifera leaves contain numerous bioactive compounds, including beta-carotene, which exhibit strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. This study aimed to predict the potential anti-inflammatory activity of beta-carotene in eczema management using an in silico approach. The beta-carotene structure was retrieved from the PubChem database in SMILES format, and its biological activities were predicted through the Way2Drug-PASS platform. The results revealed that beta-carotene demonstrated high probabilities as a dermatologic agent (Pa: 0.957), retinoic acid receptor agonist (Pa: 0.975), BRAF expression inhibitor (Pa: 0.963), along with significant antioxidant activity (Pa: 0.960). These mechanisms contribute to the suppression of pro-inflammatory mediators such as IL-6 and TNF-α, which play key roles in eczema pathogenesis. Therefore, beta-carotene from Moringa oleifera leaves holds strong potential as a natural anti-inflammatory therapeutic agent for eczema management, although further in vitro and in vivo studies are required to validate these findings.
