Abstract

Clove (Syzygium aromaticum) is a medicinal plant rich in eugenol, a major bioactive compound with diverse pharmacological activities. This study aimed to predict the potential of eugenol as a Feruloyl esterase inhibitor, an enzyme implicated in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease. The chemical structure of eugenol was retrieved from the PubChem database, and activity prediction was performed using the Way2Drug platform. The results demonstrated that eugenol exhibited a Pa (probability of activity) value of 0.881 and a Pi (probability of inactivity) value of 0.005 for Feruloyl esterase inhibitory activity. The high Pa value combined with the negligible Pi value strongly indicates the potential of eugenol as an active inhibitor. The significant difference between Pa and Pi further validates the reliability of this computational prediction. Therefore, eugenol from clove may serve as a promising natural candidate for the development of Feruloyl esterase–based therapeutic strategies against Alzheimer’s disease. Further in vitro and in vivo studies are required to confirm these findings and to explore the detailed molecular mechanisms underlying its neuroprotective potential.
